Description

Are you interested in leading discussion, lecturing and assessing students’ learning more effectively? Do you want to find out how technology can be used in a pedagogically sound manner that will help your students remain engaged? Come join us at the Faculty Roundtables on Advanced Teaching Practices and Technologies.

The Chicago Center for Teaching and Academic & Scholarly Technology Services have jointly planned nine Friday lunch-hour roundtabless in the 2014-15 academic year to discuss three themes--discussion, lecturing, and assessment. We will devote one roundtable per quarter to each theme, and each roundtable will focus on a specific pedagogical challenge. At each roundtable, featured faculty members from across the University will briefly share their experiences on the featured topic, after which the majority of time will be devoted to discussion and questions. A light lunch will be provided. The roundtables are open to all faculty, and we especially encourage new faculty to attend.

Lecture I - Lecture as a Tool for Learning

Friday, October 24, noon to 1:30 p.m., TECHB@R

In this session, we will explore techniques that enhance student learning during lecture, particularly those that engage students in active learning. After we discuss some empirical research on active lecturing, we will practice a variety of strategies, including: in-class writing; think-pair-share; and student response systems (clickers).
